CRAZY LOVE, CHAPTER ONE
Our Sunday School class has just started reading Crazy Love by Francis Chan. This week the assignment was to read chapter one. In this first chapter Francis wants us to get back to the wonder of God. He encourages us to stop talking at God and instead take a good hard look at who He is. I have to admit that my devotional life has not been what I want it to be, and what it has been in the past because I don't take the time to stop and think and wonder at God. I'm too busy trying to check off my daily Bible reading that I don't take time to stop and meditate. It's just so easy to slip into the world's mindset. The mindset of the world is to flit from one thing to another. It's easy for us to rattle off meaningless trivia and the news of the day, but how often do we sit quietly and meditate on the attributes of God or on His creation. This past year I read the book Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury and even though it is fifty years old, the picture he paints of a future society is frighteningly similar to our own. At the end of the book there are only a remnant of people left who still read books and think deep thoughts. One of them says, "Stuff your eyes with wonder..." I don't think Bradbury is a Christian, but this quote struck me as a very biblical thing to say. Psalm 19 says, "The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands..." Did you know there are more than 350,000,000,000 galaxies in the universe? Did you know a caterpillar has over 200 separate muscles in its head?! Stop and think about the God who created all this. He is a God who at the same time can rule the universe that is so massive and yet also says that He has numbered the hairs on our head.
Lately, I've been struggling with being too self-focused. I've been pondering my own significance. This chapter brought me back to where I need to be - wondering and worshipping.

Wow sister! God has been bringing me back to the wonder of Him and the awesomeness of our salvation. Chan challenges our faith and asks what do we really depend on God for? What is faith if we have no needs? I'm haunted by the question, How is my life in Christ different each and every day. Is every day the same or are his mercies new every morning? Great is His faithfulness!
