A MOTLEY GROUP OF RAMBLING THOUGHTS
I just finished the last book in the Anne series - Rilla of Ingleside. I didn't think it would amount to much but this one was definitely one of the best of the eight in the series. It is set just before WWI breaks out and tells the story from Rilla's point of view. She is the youngest of Anne and Gilbert's six children. She is also the least ambitious and most immature. I found her journey to adulthood and the chronicle of events in the Blythe family to be hard to put down. Should I be embarrassed that I am enjoying these young adult books so much? I don't care. I think they are timeless.

I recently checked out a couple issues of Christianity Today from the library. I usually don't read that magazine but was intrigued by a couple covers. The first had to do with "fixing" church discipline. The second one had Rick Warren on the cover touting his newest concept - Purpose Driven countries. Did anyone else see this? Anyway, I won't go into it because I'd be sorely tempted to slip into a cynical, uncharitable commentary. For the most part, I didn't come away from reading these magazines being encouraged or exhorted in any way. I don't know if that's their goal. Maybe their goal is to just report on what's going on in the church. The one thing that bothered me was that it seemed they were trying to strike a moderate tone. Let's not be too evangelical here. We need to reach out to Catholics and Orthodox and others. There was one article by someone who has recently converted to the Orthodox church. It confused me. The whole process of reading these magazines actually made me sad about the church in this country. I hope this doesn't sound arrogant. It just seems that we're too wishy-washy and too worldly.

Last week I got to meet my new sister-in-law! She became my sil last September when she married my husband's brother but I wasn't able to go to the wedding because it was in Minsk, Belarus. My brother-in-law has been a missionary with CCC in Albania since the early '90s. A couple years ago he met Yulia who was on staff with CCC in Belarus. They are now in the States for a long furlough in order to get citizenship stuff squared away. This Thanksgiving the whole Beatty clan will be gathering in Indianapolis to have a stateside reception for them. Yulia is a wonderful Christian woman and it seems we will get along just fine. We're so happy for David who waited until he was 41 to get married!

I haven't really had the time to go blog surfing lately. Part of it is lack of interest but mostly I just have hit a slump in the housework department. Maybe I need to start following Flylady again? I don't know. All I know is that I need to get this laundry under control and do some work in my dining room/school room to get it ready to host a dinner party next month. I'm going to try making stuffed rock cornish game hens. No carving on my part. Everyone gets their own bird. Has anyone else ever made cornish game hens? I assume the preparation is similar to roasting a whole chicken.

Let's see: Cornish game hens...I stuff them with wild rice - it "fits" the birds better than traditional bread stuffing...we love them.
Christianity Today: I used to subscribe to it years ago, but finally quit my subscription because it seemed to me to be the "Christian" equivalent of "People" magazine...I agree...I never felt encouraged or built up...just "informed".
I have always loved the Anne books and am sad that my girls just aren't "in" to them yet...someday. They are a delightful read, and I agree...I LOVED Rilla (and have toyed with the idea of naming a daughter that some day...but we'll see about that!).

I haven't made Cornish game hen in about 1o or 11 years. I've made them during a couple of our camping trips. I wrapped them in foil and place them in the coals. Delicious.
I sorry to say I haven't read any of the Anne books. My girls have never shown an interest in them despite the fact we own several in the series.
Housework! Ugh! Last Wednesday. I told all the kids to stop doing schoolwork because we were going to pick up the house. We have little messes everywhere. And laundry, ohhh my. My husband calls from work every day and asks if we are *pushing* the laundry through. ( And to say hello:))Friday night he looked into the laundry room and said, "What happened in here it was starting to look good?" All I could do was give a blank stare. Hey! Tirz has the water running and ready for me to load the washer. Sweet girl. Gotta go.

I third it! :) I've been thinking about doing some motivating laundry challenge since we all are struggling to stay atop Mt. Laundry? (Well Karen didn't say so). Whaddaya think?

I don't need to mention Mt. Laundry-more because it's ALWAYS there!! The girls are going to climb it tonight and try to conquer it, and Erik is hopefully going to complete my laundry room this week! That should make alllll of my problems go away!

Oh thanks everyone for the encouragement. I will try to post more often. I didn't realize y'all were missing me so much! Ha, ha. Karen, I like the name Rilla but not her given name, Bertha Marilla. She actually loved her first name but it's very out of style now.
I'm glad everyone else has problems with laundry too but I should have no excuse. I only have three kids!

When I was in Germany...wait maybe it was Austria...anyhow when I was in Europe, 14 years ago, I was looking at little souvenir trinkets. There were these monogrammed little bells with ribbons. Being named Roberta it's tough to find anything with my name, but they had Berta and Bertha. Berta or Bertie I have often been nicknamed so I picked it out and the people laughed and said that was a name for a cow. Sigh!!...I bought it anyway. :)
